The amazing hybrid brass band music of New Orleans contains elements of traditional jazz, modern jazz, R & B, funk, gospel, and Caribbean music, but it's a world unto itself, and doesn't sound like any other music. The New Orleans brass band tradition almost died out in the early 1970's, as older musicians died off and the younger ones didn't seem interested in taking their places, for the most part.     2. this is an interesting history mostly told through interviews with committed musicians and scene supporters. the rise of brass bands in the 70s and the pivotal role of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, Pinstripe, etc. becomes plain. The cultural and sociological context, such as a healthy route to direct youthful energy, also becomes clear.

    3. It's so fun and enlightening to read about the evolution of New Orleans brass band culture from the perspective of the musicians themselves. If you're a fan of this music and everything that it came from and comes from it (social aid and pleasure clubs, second line parades, etc.), this book is very enjoyable.
