    1. This book is one of the best pieces of reportage to come out of WWII, and came close to winning a Pulitzer in 1943. Yet it’s since been completely forgotten. Born in 1904, Ève Curie was French but, as the younger daughter of Marie Curie, she spoke Polish as well. As a young woman she had some success as a pianist, but seems to have felt she was not good enough for a concert career, and moved into journalism instead, via a popular biography of her mother published in 1937.
