    1. File under: I'm trying to be a poetry person, but I think novels in verse are as close as I can get

    2. Loved this collection of poems by a favorite poet! There are many many favorites in these pages and I can envision using them with students in a variety of ways. And the final version promises illustrations I've not even seen yet can't wait to own a hard back copy. Some of the poems are love poems to beloved poets: Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Mary Oliver, Lucille Clifton and so many more. My absolute favorite of these is about visiting John O'Donahue's home shortly after his death. Some of the [...]

    3. Any book of poetry by Naomi Shihab Nye is cause for celebration and this volume which will be published early next year is no exception. This lovely book of over 100 poems dips into a wide variety of subjects but always with reflection and the quiet strength to stand up and say what matters. As a delightful aside, the writer has added short bios of the many people who inspired the poems.

    4. E ARC from Edelweiss PlusThis new collection of poems from the wonderful Nye is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, when she is good, she makes me cry. Her Honeybee and A Maze Me are always the first books to check out when the seventh grade does their poetry unit. She excels at taking every day experiences and imbuing them with the universal truths that make poetry so touching. Even though she writes in free verse (of which I am not a huge fan), her language is still poetic, and her poems do [...]

    5. I worked my way slowly through this collection with a poem or two a day, holding the reins on my urge to read another and then another and gallop through all at once.Thoughtful, funny, moving, inspiring, subversive, calming. I loved the introduction asking us to pause on our way to everywhere, to listen, to find our way home. Now that I've finished it, I'm going to start through again. "It's a gift we give our minds."

    6. Nearly 100 short poems celebrate others' voices, from writers and singers to her own Palestinian-American father. Lovely to read leisurely and think about, this leads the reader to more discoveries. This is clearly a crossover book, middle school up. read in galley. A favorite poet writing about her own favorite writers and thinkers from Robert Louis Stevenson and Emily Dickenson to Peter Matthieson and John Muir, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen, Chief Joseph and Yehuda Amichai.

    7. I received this through Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. A poem in verse that brings light to current social issues. This novel can challenge readers politically, or it will empower them. I wish that the poems were more cohesive, though perhaps they were and I just missed the point of some of them.

    8. I've become a bigger fan of poetry recently, so I welcomed the receiving of this fine body of work by this accomplished author. Admittedly my realm is that of horror short stories, so I don't consider myself any kind of expert in the poetry genre. Overall I found the works unique and refreshing. Thank you for the opportunity.

    9. Insightful and thought-provoking reflections on modern life/digital age, encouragement to slow down, listen to nature, appreciation quiet moments, enjoy childhood, learn from those who came before and acknowledge one's uniqueness as well as cultural/historical connections.

    10. A variety of messages about life within these poems. Haunting images of life moments come through these words.

    11. It has been a long time since I read a collection of poems. This was the perfect way to quench that thirst.

    12. My first introduction to Naomi Shihab Nye was through The Turtle of Oman in 2017. I immediately fell in love with Naomi Shihab Nye’s writing. Even when she was writing prose, her talent for verse came through. So when I heard about Voices in the Air, I was immediately intrigued and ready to gobble the collection whole.Unfortunately, Voices in the Air, wasn’t what I was expecting. It takes a while for Nye to really build on her poems. It is slow-going at first and the poems themselves didn’ [...]
