    1. A nice picture book with bold artwork and short verses in rhyme. Perfect for storytime. A clever way to introduce young children to animals and natural landscapes.

    2. 5* art5* storyOne of my favorites. So many things - riding in the canoe with Grandpa, seeing all the insects and wildlife, watching the sun go down, and the magic of night on the water. All loveliness. This is a book I want to make happen in Squirt's real life. Highly, highly recommended.

    3. This lovely picture book by Canadian Leslie Davidson is a delight on every page. Beautifully illustrated by Laura Bifano, In the Red Canoe features a girl and her grandfather sharing delights and discoveries of nature as they paddle a lake. Davidson uses a four-line rhyming scheme (abcb) that begs to be read aloud: “We find a place to hunt for frogs, a secret, muddy beach. How do they always know to stay just one hop out of reach?” The full-bleed, painterly illustrations of gouache are lush [...]

    4. In the Red Canoe has lovely illustrations and simple poetry. It is a pretty read but nothing earth-shattering. It will appeal to grandparents who love to read to their grandchildren and lovers of the outdoors. It is a quintessential Canadian experience so it would make a lovely gift if you are going abroad and want to give something which represents your homeland. It is a good text for teaching about 'juicy' words, that is, descriptive language. It would make a good instructional text for visual [...]

    5. An ode to nature, grandfathers, and time spent with the ones we love. A young girl and her grandfather spend a day and evening out in a red canoe, exploring the wild world around them. It reminded me of going canoeing with my family as a child. The illustrations are rich and bring the wildlife off the page.

    6. Every child should have a grandparent to take them in a canoe/kayak to explore the great outdoors. A most lovely story and awesome illustrations make you feel you are there!

    7. Illustrated nature themed picture books are a delight to me, but this is not one of them. The illustrations are dak in dark tones and the text is rhyming four line stanzas. Both the author and illustrator live in British Columbia so my perceptions of nature and theirs are probably very different based on our experiences in geographically different locales.

    8. Loved the illustrations. Not terribly impressed by the writing, but I admit I am biased against rhyming picture books (with a few notable exceptions). This was not one of those exceptions. Beautiful book, though.

    9. The illustrations on this book are absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the story fell a little flat to me. It reads a lot like a poem and I just did not connect with it. I love the idea of the grandfather and granddaughter relationship and had really wanted to love this story.

    10. These beautiful illustrations and descriptive words capture a beautiful world of love and nature. The relationship between the child and grandfather is sublime. Unfortunately, the poetry didn't quite work for me.

    11. A girl enjoys spending summertime rowing in a red canoe with her grandma and seeing the wonders of nature.Beautiful illustrations.

    12. OMG! This is a must have picture book. The text will make you smile - will cause lovely goosebumps - and will fill you heart with joy. The illustrations are a work of art. I loved every minute out on the lake with the little boy and his Grandpa in the canoe exploring their world. I'm keeping this book on my desk, so I can read it over and over.

    13. Amazing book and illustrations. Brings back wonderful memories and now I'll have to relive them with my own children and make new ones!

    14. A young child and grandfather see so many wonderful things in this lilting tale of a canoe trip over the course of a day. The last page shows grandfather carrying a sleepy, peaceful grandchild into the house.

    15. The lovely observations of a little girl paddling in a canoe all day with her Grandpa. They see a variety of wildlife, as the quiet outing progresses. Wishing the illustrations were a bit less cute and a bit more realistic, but otherwise a delightful read.

    16. A sweet, rhyming look at canoe rides with grandpa - seeing and appreciating the wildlife (though conveniently not mentioning mosquitos!) and enjoying quality time together.Gorgeous illustrations.

    17. Being out in a red canoe with a grandfather is a little girl's dream, beautifully shown in the illustrations and rhyme in this debut picture book.

    18. A great story about quality time spent with grandpa and all the wildlife they see in their canoe.
