    1. Reviewed by Rabia Tanveer for Readers' FavoriteSoul of Toledo by Edward Webster is set in Toledo almost 30 years before the Spanish Inquisition. The story recounts little known facts about the time when Toledo was almost destroyed by a madman and his minions. The plot centers around Viçente Pérez, a converted Christian whose parents are still Jews. He is a man of great power and he may be the only person who can stop the current tension and help people find peace in these troubled times. The J [...]

    2. This historical novel was set in Spain in the 1400s, before the Spanish Inquisition. I have read very little about this time and I found this story very informative. It was obvious that the author did much research on the subject. He effectively wound the fictional story of Viçente Pérez, who was a person of political prominence in Toledo during this time, with some characters who truly lived during this time period. The story of Viçente is interesting because he was so conflicted about who h [...]

    3. In Soul of Toledo, the city of Toledo is brimming with anger and suspicion, with powerful people both in religion and politics questioning anyone not viewed as true Christians. The book is set before the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition, and the circumstances of prejudice and hatred are creating a dangerous and deadly situation. Vicente Perez, a convert to Christianity with parents who secretly still practiced Judaic traditions, has grown up to be the city’s deputy, now in charge of keepin [...]

    4. A sweeping historical epic that highlights a little-known era: a rogue attempt to purge Jews and false Christians years before the Spanish Inquisition. Webster's characters are intriguing, relatable & flawed: Vicente, now the second-most-powerful man in Toldeo, hides as a shameful secret about his past; Marcos, ruthlessly ambitious with a dark past of his own; the mysterious Francesca, who enjoys the noble life at a king's palace in Naples, but lives under his thumb, too. What I love about t [...]

    5. This is my favorite kind of historical fiction. It sets the stage by putting us in a fictional world that seems genuine and rich with details. Clearly Edward Webster has done his research. The hero, Vicente, is a real man, flawed in some ways but striving for the good. No superior powers here, but will power, wit and skill. The love between Vicente and Francesca again is real (not 'romancy' but romantic), tangible and inspiring. One of my favorite historical fiction reads.

    6. I have been always interested in this period of Spanish history. The book is well-written and the descriptions are good. However, it ultimately proved too slow-paced for me. I read through 30% on my Kindle and lost interest. I need something with more suspense or some element of mystery.
