    1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on this book, therefore I have a love-hate relationship with it. If you enjoy Spanish Golden Age literature, you must read Novelas amorosas y ejemplares.

    2. This was much better than I thought it was going to be considering it was the first book I had to read for university. I also have never read any Spanish literature before. I loved the style of writing that allowed for the ballads that expressed deeper emotions. I also loved the way the book was a festival with the stories being part of that festival. Like a story inside a story inside another story. It was a great way to set up a collection of short stories. The second half of the book "Tales of [...]

    4. For my first foray into Spanish literature this was profoundly disappointing. Zayas's "Exemplary Tales" are somewhat amusing to the modern reader despite the long-winded and rambling prose of the 16th century but I generally found this book to be quite boring. Zayas takes so long to get to the point that by the time she reaches the climax of the "tale" in question, the outcome is no longer interesting or worth noting. Nothing in this book was particularly noteworthy, unique or engaging and I wou [...]

    6. Zayas skillfully and ingeniously takes the genre of "novelas ejemplares" and turns it on its head, creating a powerful female voice as a response to the patriarchal society and literary "norms" of her time. One of my favorite authors!
