Honestly, I recall most of this book as little more than a blur of chrysanthemum petals and jade jewelry and plum blossoms and pearl jewelry and silk brocade and bound feet and other imagined imagery of that kind. The book largely revolves around a series of poems mythologizing a real historical figure, the Empress Dowager Cixi of China (1835-1908). The Dowager is obviously a figure of great emotional significance to the poet Tina Chang (in one pivotal poem, titled "The Dowager Meets Me in the P [...]

    2. High 3. Like so many collections of poetry, there are some absolute stand-outs and some absolute bores. The standouts had that kind of sideways angle on language that I love. And the bores were Contemporary with a capital C.
