This is an interesting book on the Jamestown Colony, starting out with information about how investors in England hoped to become rich off the colony, thinking it would find all sorts of gold and other treasures. It also points out how some of the settlers thought they were too good to get their hands dirty and do any work.There were also leadership problems and problems with the Native Americans. The death rate from all causes, especially disease, was quite high. For example, 500 colonists star [...]

    2. This is a reasonable general overview with nice illustrations and engaging text. There are some factual inaccuracies, though (for instance, it states that Columbus was the first European to reach North America; actually Columbus never set foot on North America, and in any case the first European to reach North America was either St. Brendan or--more likely--a Viking), so this is best read as part of a larger narrative.

    3. A good student resource with illustrations and accounts of the first permanent English settlement in North America. This text explains about the tragedies and discoveries made by the 1607 establishment in Virginia. Contains a glossary, important dates timeline, building outlines and attacks.
